Les activités et les relations professionnelles dans le service d’imagerie d’un hôpital public non universitaire constituent le thème central du travail de recherche présenté ici. Sur la toile de fond de la sociologie des professions (où une perspective épistémologique de la discipline est présentée), des questions telles que : l’autonomie et l’autorité professionnelles ; les relations, tensions et conflits intra et interprofessionnels ; les configurations prises par la technologie dans le domaine de l’imagerie ; les techniques utilisées ; les risques professionnels auxquels sont exposés les travailleurs de ce service ; le pouvoir de la profession médicale et ses effets sur l’émergence et l’affirmation de 'nouvelles' professions de la santé, à savoir les techniciens en radiologie. La partie méthodologique de l’étude aborde certains facteurs qui interfèrent avec les résultats, en particulier les aspects qui peuvent biaiser les données obtenues (y compris le chercheur lui-même). En effet, la recherche n’est jamais totalement neutre. Dans un domaine de recherche où les interactions sociales sont multiples, les conclusions obtenues sont à la fois surprenantes et éclairantes sur le milieu hospitalier.
