The Life and Travels of Mungo Park in Central Africa is a memoir written by Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer who traveled extensively in West Africa during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The book chronicles Park’s adventures as he explores the interior of Africa, encountering various tribes, navigating treacherous rivers, and enduring harsh conditions.Park’s journey began in 1795 when he was commissioned by the African Association to explore the Niger River and the surrounding regions. Over the course of his travels, he encountered numerous obstacles, including hostile tribes, disease, and the harsh African climate. Despite these challenges, Park persevered and eventually became the first European to reach the Niger River. The book provides a detailed account of Park’s journey, including his encounters with various African tribes, his observations on the natural environment, and his experiences navigating the Niger River. Park’s writing is vivid and descriptive, providing readers with a fascinating glimpse into the world of 18th-century Africa.Overall, The Life and Travels of Mungo Park in Central Africa is a captivating memoir that offers valuable insights into the history and culture of Africa, as well as the challenges faced by early explorers. It is a must-read for anyone interested in African history, exploration, or adventure. On the 2d of December 1795, I took my departure from the hospitable mansion of Dr. Laidley. I was fortunately provided with a Negro servant, who spoke both the English and Mandingo tongues. His name was Johnson. He was a native of this part of Africa; and having in his youth been convoyed to Jamaica as a slave, he had been made free, and taken to England by his master, where he had resided many years; and at length found his way back to his native country. As he was known to Dr. Laidley, the Doctor recommended him to me, and I hired him as my interpreter, at the rate of ten bars monthly, to be paid to himself, and five bars a month to be paid to his wife during his absence. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
