Qu’est-ce que l’Europe ? La communauté de valeurs tant vantée ? L’Occident chrétien ? Ou simplement un continent ? Qu’elle soit considérée comme une entité géographique ou une communauté politique, l’Europe est toujours aussi une construction mentale qui trace des frontières. Le recours à différentes images de l’Europe sert souvent à des fins stratégiques : si les gens se sentent menacés par l’islam, l’image de l’Europe comme Occident chrétien est utilisée pour établir une distinction. Si le Brexit est imminent, la construction de l’Europe en tant que puissance économique est activée. L’image de l’Europe dont on parle dépend donc de manière décisive du contexte et du discours actuel. Les médias jouent ici un rôle important. Ils véhiculent certaines images de l’Europe et ont ainsi une grande portée. C’est pourquoi l’auteure de cet ouvrage a mené des entretiens avec des rédacteurs de chaînes de télévision publiques. Les journalistes interrogés sont tous responsables d’émissions consacrées à l’Europe. Dans les entretiens, les rédacteurs expliquent ce que l’Europe représente pour eux et quelles facettes de l’Europe ils transmettent aux téléspectateurs dans leurs émissions.
