Par ses rites, l’Église évangélique de Polynésie française cherche à transmettre une image tout à la fois protestante et polynésienne de Dieu. C’est à cette certitude qu’Olivier Bauer est parvenu après six années de recherches à Tahiti et dans quelques îles de Polynésie française. Ce travail lui a valu le titre de docteur en théologie de l’Université de Lausanne en Suisse.L’ouvrage commence par une préface de l’ethnologue Pierre Centlivres. Il comprend deux parties principales :• Dans un chapitre méthodologique, l’auteur aborde la question des rites sous l’angle de la ritualisation et de l’influence. Il souligne la pertinence d’une telle approche pour la théologie protestante.• Dans un chapitre polynésien, il applique la méthode à quatre rites de l’Église évangélique de Polynésie française : le culte, les funérailles, la cène et la confirmation. L’auteur décrit ce que peut voir, entendre, sentir, toucher et goûter celui qui participe à ces rites. Il analyse en quoi les rites protestants intègrent la culture polynésienne ou s’en démarquent. Il met en évidence les stratégies de ritualisation qu’utilisent les protestants polynésiens.L’ethnologue trouvera dans ce livre une description minutieuse et inédite des rites protestants polynésiens et le théologien une méthode originale et féconde pour aborder les rites religieux.
