 J’ai mis sur la scène, d’après l’Histoire, des fourbes et des fanatiques ; mais je leur ai opposé de vrais Chrétiens Jean-François Marmontel, membre de l’Académie française, a choisi de nous conter la colonisation du Pérou par les Espagnols sous une forme romanesque des plus divertissantes. Au plus près de la grande histoire des grands conquistadors (Francisco Pizarro, Diego de Almagro) et des derniers rois Incas de Cuzco (Huascar, Atahualpa), l’auteur mêle commentaires personnels, romance et événements réels afin de souligner la tragédie que fut la conquête de l’Amérique latine par le royaume d’Espagne. Il y critique le fanatisme religieux, la soif de l’or et le rôle des souverains hispaniques dans les massacres des peuples précolombiens. Ce roman historique et philosophique met en avant notamment le rôle de Bartolomé de Las Casas, le  protecteur des Indiens , l’homme de la Controverse de Valladolid. Cette édition illustrée, complète (Tome I - Tome II) a fait l’objet d’un travail de modernisation.
