Cet ouvrage a pour objectif de présenter la violente opposition entre catholiques et protestants dans l’Angleterre du XVIe siècle, sous le règne de la reine Marie Ire, de 1553 à 1558. En analysant la législation du régime marial et les principales injonctions royales, il apparaît clairement qu’il existait à l’époque des liens indissociables entre la religion et la politique. En ce qui concerne la politique étrangère, le livre examine l’influence du mari de Marie Ire, le futur Philippe II d’Espagne, et des Habsbourg, car ce mariage a finalement marqué l’équilibre des pouvoirs en Europe. Afin de donner un aperçu complet des questions religieuses qui ont caractérisé l’époque de Marie Tudor, le livre s’intéresse non seulement à la législation et à l’attitude de Marie envers les protestants, mais aussi aux motifs possibles de la propagation de l’hérésie en Angleterre à partir de la fin du XIVe siècle, aux antécédents du règne de Marie Ire et aux conséquences du régime marial.
