C’est essentiellement pour n’avoir pas exactement compris pourquoi l’Allemagne a fait la guerre, - son objectif essentiel ayant été d’établir son contrôle sur l’Europe centrale, - que les Alliés n’ont pas dès le début découvert comment il fallait conduire la guerre pour vaincre vite l’Allemagne en faisant obstacle à la partie principale de son plan. Si celle-ci avait été bien réalisée à Paris et à Londres, les alliés auraient organisé au plus vite l’expédition Salonique-Vienne-Prague-Berlin qui, en outre, était l’opération la plus propre à mettre fin à la pression allemande sur le front occidental, comme on finira bien par s’en persuader.L’établissement des véritables causes de la guerre n’est donc pas seulement intéressant pour l’intelligence historique du passé, il a, en outre, une importance capitale pour la compréhension du présent et la préparation de l’avenir.
