Leptospiroza jest kosmopolityczną, endemiczną i stosunkowo powszechną chorobą. W Brazylii występuje w każdym miesiącu roku na obszarach miejskich i wiejskich, a jej epidemie związane są z najbardziej deszczowymi miesiącami i klęskami żywiołowymi, takimi jak powodzie. Jej nawroty związane z warunkami wrażliwości społeczno-środowiskowej stanowią nierówność zdrowotną. W latach 2007-2013 w Brazylii potwierdzono 26 489 przypadków tej choroby, z 2 479 zgonami. Ze względu na topograficzne cechy terenu, które oferują korzystne warunki dla występowania leptospirozy i częstych opadów deszczu, przeprowadzono badanie przestrzenno-czasowego rozmieszczenia tej choroby w dzielnicach Belém do Pará w tym samym okresie, wykorzystując geoprzetworzone dane epidemiologiczne.
