Os parasitas protozoários cinetoplastídeos unicelulares do género Leishmania são os agentes causadores de doenças negligenciadas complexas denominadas leishmaniose e continuam a ser uma preocupação de saúde significativa a nível mundial. O capítulo 1 apresenta uma breve panorâmica da leishmaniose e descreve o número de fármacos disponíveis para o tratamento, bem como as possíveis vias de atuação do parasita Leishmania. O objetivo do capítulo 2 é fornecer uma atualização dos conhecimentos actuais sobre a aquisição e utilização do ferro pelas espécies de Leishmania. Para a sobrevivência e virulência do parasita, o ferro como ião metálico desempenha um papel crucial em muitas facetas do metabolismo celular como cofator de várias enzimas. A aquisição de ferro é essencial para a sobrevivência dos parasitas. Uma vez que o ferro desempenha papéis centrais na resposta do hospedeiro e no metabolismo do parasita, uma compreensão abrangente do metabolismo do ferro é benéfica para identificar potenciais oportunidades terapêuticas viáveis contra a leishmaniose.
