Le leghe nanocristalline di tipo FINEMET (FeSiBCuNb) con diametro medio dei grani ~ 10 nm, ottenute dalla devetrificazione di leghe amorfe rapidamente solidificate (tipicamente nastri di 20 mm di spessore), sono interessanti per le applicazioni grazie alle loro eccellenti proprietà magnetiche morbide, ad esempio - elevata induzione magnetica di saturazione paragonabile alle leghe amorfe a base di Fe e grande permeabilità, come osservato nei vetri metallici a base di Co. Nelle leghe di tipo Finemet la presenza di una piccola quantità di Cu aumenta il tasso di nucleazione, mentre la presenza di Nb inibisce la crescita dei grani, determinando una nanocristallizzazione che si è rivelata un fattore chiave per ottenere la particolare struttura a grani ultra fini.
