Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church

'Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church' provides a comprehensive and illuminating examination of the evolution of Eastern Orthodoxy. Authored by the esteemed scholar Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, this work offers a detailed historical account of the Eastern Church’s unique path, distinguishing its traditions, liturgy, and theology from those of the West. Stanley focuses on critical historical junctures, most notably the Council of Nicaea, and provides vivid character sketches of key figures such as Constantine the Great and Athanasius. The lectures explore the geographical and cultural expanses of the Greek and Russian churches, tracing their development from the early centuries of Christianity through the Middle Ages.By blending scholarly analysis with an accessible narrative, the book captures the essence of the Eastern religious spirit and its impact on the broader Christian world. 'Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church' remains a vital text for understanding the historical foundations of the Orthodox faith and the enduring legacy of the Byzantine religious tradition. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
