L’économie du travail revêt une grande importance car elle s’intéresse au capital humain considéré comme facteur de production dont la qualité influe sur la productivité ainsi que sur la rentabilité des organisations. Ainsi, il est exposé et explicité tout à tour les différents fondements théoriques de l’économie du travail à travers les analyses classiques et néoclassiques d’Adam Smith et de Léon Walras, l’analyse de John Maynard Keynes, la théorie de la croissance endogène de Paul Romer, Robert Lucas et Robert Barro. L’utilisation du capital humain exige une explication de certains concepts et théories, notamment les concepts liés au travail, les concepts liés au marché du travail et les concepts démographiques suivis de l’exposition des théories sur les contrats implicites, les insiders-outsiders et la théorie du déséquilibre. Une analyse microéconomique du marché du travail a permis de traiter le problème de l’offre d’un salarié individuel suivie de celle de la demande qui permet de déterminer le nombre de travailleurs dont l’entreprise a besoin pour maximiser son profit.
