Les booms des ressources naturelles peuvent être des catalyseurs importants pour le développement des pays pauvres, et l’abondance des ressources naturelles devrait intuitivement conduire à une croissance économique accrue pour le pays doté de ces dotations chanceuses. Cependant, les pays en développement qui disposent de ressources naturelles sont, paradoxalement et à quelques exceptions près, susceptibles de connaître une croissance économique lente, de réprimer leur population et de souffrir de conflits fréquents. Ce document de recherche examine si et comment la découverte et l’extraction des ressources naturelles au Soudan ont affecté la motivation et la dynamique des violents conflits civils dans le pays. En utilisant la théorie de la malédiction des ressources avec la théorie des conflits et les données empiriques du Soudan, cet article soutient que les ressources naturelles ont eu de forts effets aggravants sur les conflits du pays. Ces effets ont été à la fois directs (en changeant les moyens économiques et les motivations derrière les conflits) et indirects (à travers les mécanismes de la malédiction des ressources).
