Un équilibre du genre la caractérise, les femmes étant d’ailleurs plus jeunes. Ce professionnel vit des doutes, des incertitudes et des précarités. Perçu comme spécialiste à la marge, il est partagé entre l’isolement, voire l’exclusion et l’espoir d’une reconnaissance prochaine. Le journaliste scientifique d’Afrique francophone pense surtout à combler le déficit de connaissances du public, à être un enquêteur plutôt qu’un reporter et vise d’abord la culture de la liberté d’expression. On dirait qu’il veut surtout partager l’ignorance dans le sens où il veut faire prendre conscience au public des frontières de ses connaissances à défaut de répandre la science. Il pense avoir de bonnes relations avec les scientifiques, mais constate que ceux-ci communiquent peu. Élargissant ce premier croquis africain aux pays francophones, on aperçoit un espace insoupçonné, une nouvelle terre de pratiques. Là, le journaliste scientifique construit véritablement un nouvel univers, une nouvelle culture, troisième champ.
