Simone Weil (1909-1943) a vécu une existence profondément marquée par le sentiment de partager la souffrance d’autrui. Ce sentiment l’a surtout liée au christianisme comme domaine où l’on peut trouver un horizon de sens à l’expérience déchirante de la souffrance, ainsi qu’un exemple qu’il est possible d’accomplir un acte de compassion même au milieu de l’extrême déracinement de la vie. Motivée par cette référence, elle a formulé une critique sévère des formes de ségrégation et d’oppression qui existent dans les religions institutionnalisées, qui apparaît comme un thème riche et stimulant dans ses réflexions.
