Le Sénégal a connu un drame des plus meurtriers de l’histoire maritime. Encore plus meurtrier que celui du Titanic. Au soir du 26 septembre 2002, le ferry ralliant Dakar - Ziguinchor a coulé au large des côtes gambiennes, emportant avec lui près de 2 000 passagers à bord. Bilan total 64 survivants. D’après les enquêtes, plusieurs faits paraissent révélateurs de l’existence d’un problème au sein du navire Le Joola. Après sa chute, une enquête a été lancée par les autorités sénégalaises pour situer les responsabilités. Mais trois jours plus tard, toutes les enquêtes ont été suspendues. L’État du Sénégal décide de classer le dossier sans suite et le Commandant du bateau, Issa Diarra, disparu pendant le naufrage est déclaré le seul responsable de la tragédie. Aucun procès n’a jamais eu lieu malgré les neufs mandats internationaux qui ont été émis par la France contre des responsables sénégalais et les familles des victimes réclament justice depuis vingt-deux ans.
