On y trouve déjà l’écrivain influencé par Baudelaire et l’esthétique naturaliste avec laquelle il rompra dans À rebours. Les quatre pièces lues ici sont indépendantes, mais La Reine Margot et La Kermesse de Rubens sont à considérer comme un diptyque.Ce recueil inclut aussi Pages retrouvées et Un dilemme.
