Il fiume è la risorsa naturale più importante per la vita umana. Un fiume è definito come un grande corso d’acqua naturale che sfocia in un oceano o in un lago. L’acqua in movimento diluisce e decompone gli inquinanti più rapidamente dell’acqua stagnante, ma molti fiumi e torrenti in tutto il mondo sono fortemente inquinati e anche l’uso umano, comprese le attività domestiche, industriali, agricole e ricreative, influisce sulla qualità dell’acqua. Negli ultimi anni, lo stato di inquinamento dei sistemi acquatici viene determinato utilizzando le diatomee. Le diatomee sono i principali produttori nei fiumi e possono essere facilmente raccolte e conservate. Gli indici basati sulle diatomee sono strumenti importanti per la valutazione delle condizioni ambientali in tutti i sistemi acquatici. Gli obiettivi di questa ricerca sono determinare lo stato di inquinamento e la valutazione dell’impatto ambientale (VIA) del fiume utilizzando le diatomee. Il nostro lavoro si è concentrato sugli indici delle diatomee e sull’indice di qualità dell’acqua del fiume Cauvery, Tamil Nadu, India meridionale.
