Os rios são os recursos naturais mais importantes para a vida humana. Um rio é definido como um grande curso natural de água que desagua num oceano ou lago. A água em movimento dilui e decompõe os poluentes mais rapidamente do que a água estagnada, mas muitos rios e ribeiros estão significativamente poluídos em todo o mundo e também o uso humano, incluindo atividades domésticas, industriais, agrícolas e recreativas, afeta a qualidade da água. Nos últimos anos, o estado de poluição do sistema aquático é avaliado utilizando diatomáceas. As diatomáceas são os principais produtores nos rios e podem ser facilmente recolhidas e preservadas. Os índices baseados em diatomáceas são ferramentas importantes para a avaliação das condições ambientais em todos os sistemas aquáticos. Os objetivos desta investigação são determinar o estado de poluição e a avaliação do impacto ambiental (AIA) do rio utilizando diatomáceas. O nosso trabalho centrou-se nos índices de diatomáceas e no índice de qualidade da água do rio Cauvery, Tamil Nadu, sul da Índia.
