Cet ouvrage a pour vocation de mettre en valeur la richesse de la Scuola Napoletana (1606-1656), qui émerge après les deux séjours du Caravage à Naples. Y sont évoqués la naissance, le développement et les multiples facettes du seul centre artistique qui continue de considérer le caravagisme comme une force vitale de la peinture jusqu’en 1656, année de la Grande Peste qui emporte avec elle les derniers peintres d’ascendance caravagesque. L’auteur revient sur le polymorphisme de l’expression caravagesque dans le Sud, pour ensuite évoquer l’extrême diversité des peintres caravagesques napolitains, unis par une passion commune pour le caravagisme originel mais dont l’expression artistique intègre peu à peu d’autres influences. Si Battistello et les premiers naturalistes ont une interprétation orthodoxe du caravagisme, Ribera et ses suiveurs optent pour une peinture à forte portée sociale.
