Les résultats du cinquième recensement général de la population et de l’Habitat (RGPH5), réalisé au Mali en 2022, comportent une surprise : pour la première fois depuis le premier recensement de 1976, les hommes y sont plus nombreux que les femmes. Le rapport de masculinité atteint 101,1 hommes pour 100 femmes, contre 98,4 en 2009 et 95,3 en 1976. Le résultat déconcerte, car les deux grands mécanismes qui façonnent d’ordinaire la structure par sexe d’une population sahélienne, une surmortalité masculine à tous les âges et une émigration de main-d’œuvre très majoritairement masculine, auraient dû produire l’effet inverse. Cet ouvrage propose une explication en trois temps. Il établit d’abord que l’excédent masculin national est numériquement modeste : 117 621 personnes, soit 0,53 % de la population recensée. Il montre ensuite, par décomposition de cet excédent entre les sous-populations que l’INSTAT distingue lui-même, que les ménages collectifs, casernes, internats, camps de chantier et établissements pénitentiaires dont la population est féminine à 13,5 % seulement, en concentrent 65 %, alors qu’ils ne représentent que 0,47 % des effectifs recensés.
