Zjawisko wzmacniania światła poprzez wymuszoną emisję promieniowania (LASER) zostało po raz pierwszy opisane jako koncepcja teoretyczna przez Alberta Einsteina w 1917 roku, jednak dopiero w 1954 roku J.P. Gordon i C.H. Townes w Bell Laboratories wygenerowali pierwsze „stymulowane' emisje promieniowania mikrofalowego (MASER).Koncepcja leczenia przyzębia uległa radykalnej zmianie w ciągu ostatnich dziesięcioleci - od bardzo agresywnego podejścia chirurgicznego polegającego na eliminacji kieszonek przyzębnych do leczenia zachowawczego. Obecnie celem leczenia jest po prostu usunięcie czynników wywołujących chorobę przyzębia. W tym kontekście zastosowanie laserów w leczeniu przyzębia może stanowić kolejny krok w kierunku bardziej zachowawczego leczenia. Chociaż lasery są stosowane w terapii przyzębia od co najmniej 10 lat, klinicyści dopiero zaczynają wykorzystywać ogromny potencjał tej formy terapii. Względny brak bólu, łatwość stosowania oraz precyzyjne działanie lasera w określonym miejscu sprawiają, że jest on idealnym uzupełnieniem arsenału narzędzi periodontologa. Obecnie opracowuje się zastosowania dla szerszego zakresu długości fal, które zapewnią użyteczną, przewidywalną i komfortową terapię w leczeniu pacjentów z chorobami przyzębia.
