Participó en la Conferencia de Paz de París tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, lo que inspiró su obra Las consecuencias económicas de la paz (1919). Su libro más importante, Teoría general del empleo, el interés y el dinero (1936), transformó la economía moderna al proponer que el Estado intervenga para reducir el desempleo y enfrentar crisis.
