Las aventuras del último abencerraje apareció en 1826, pero fue escrita por Chateaubriand veinte años antes y no publicada, porque el retrato que en ella se hace del pueblo español, hostil a Napoleón, hubiera sido censurado. La novela muestra el dolor de los árabes que, una vez perdido el reino de Granada (1492), han tenido que diseminarse por África. En la tribu de los abencerrajes, establecida en los alrededores de Túnez, el joven príncipe Aben-Hamet, casi tres decenios más tarde, decide hacer una peregrinación al país de sus abuelos, España. A la vista de los palacios de la Alhambra y de los lugares que testimonian el esplendor de aquella civilización, se siente presa de profundas emociones. El encuentro, entre las mismas ruinas, de una bella y apasionada española, doña Blanca, ofrece al último abencerraje el consuelo por las desgracias de su raza. El amor entre la cristiana Blanca y el árabe Aben-Hamet nace del contraste de una fe y una patria, pero el joven no sabe que Blanca desciende del héroe exterminador de los moros, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el Cid Campeador. El idilio doloroso, tan cálidamente expresado, ha contribuido naturalmente mucho a la gran popularidad de la narración.
