Our entire cognitive development depends on language development. Any child who experiences a delay in acquiring language skills is inevitably limited in their ability to acquire knowledge about the world and is therefore at a disadvantage. As expected, children with Down syndrome exhibit a delay in cognitive development; they develop their awareness and understanding of general relationships more slowly and have difficulties with logical thinking and memory. Their intellectual disability is also partly interpreted as a consequence of their difficulties with language acquisition, since language is a vital tool for acquiring knowledge, understanding, thinking, reasoning, and remembering. It is therefore essential to provide the best possible support for the early development of children with Down syndrome with regard to the development of their mental lexicon, grammar, and syntax.
