Ogni bambino che presenta un ritardo nell’acquisizione della comunicazione verbale è inevitabilmente limitato nelle sue capacità di acquisire conoscenze sul mondo e quindi svantaggiato. Come prevedibile, i bambini con sindrome di Down mostrano un ritardo nello sviluppo cognitivo: sviluppano più lentamente la loro consapevolezza e la comprensione dei nessi generali e presentano difficoltà nel pensiero logico e nella memoria. Il loro ritardo mentale viene in parte interpretato anche come conseguenza delle loro difficoltà nell’acquisizione del linguaggio, poiché il linguaggio è uno strumento fondamentale per l’acquisizione della conoscenza, la comprensione, il pensiero, il ragionamento e la memoria. È quindi fondamentale sostenere al meglio lo sviluppo precoce dei bambini con sindrome di Down per quanto riguarda la costruzione del loro lessico mentale, della grammatica e della sintassi.
