La valutazione dell’opera di Erodoto ha la sua giusta misura quando vediamo che è la prima opera estesa di prosa greca. Anche se alla fine del VI secolo e nella prima metà del V secolo a.C. furono scritti testi filosofici, come quelli di Eraclito e Democrito, e cronache locali con elementi etnografici dai cosiddetti logografi come Cadmo di Mileto, sono sempre di breve lunghezza.La narrazione di Erodoto, sia nei suoi aspetti letterari che storici, non ha eguali negli scritti greci del suo tempo. La sua rilevanza è paragonabile solo alla grande epopea omerica, anche se ci sono differenze fondamentali, soprattutto nell’esposizione delle cause logiche ed evidenti. Erodoto vuole trasmetterci le gesta degli uomini, interpretate dagli uomini, per questo gli dei non appaiono quasi mai nelle Storie e, se sono menzionati, non agiscono mai direttamente e personalmente come accade nell’Iliade o nell’Odissea. Ma soprattutto, il padre della storia, espone le sue ricerche riconoscendo il valore dell’alterità, una nobile virtù fino ad allora poco conosciuta nelle culture del Mediterraneo.
