Un demi-siècle après l’indépendance nationale, la société sakalava de Madagascar voit évoluer sur un même microterritoire (Belo et Tsiribihina) deux formations sociales. La première, urbanisée, réduit les Fitampoha, cultes des reliques royales, à une forme étatique et théâtralisée de l’intégration nationale. Dans la seconde, rurale, la jeune génération qui n’a connu ni la royauté ni la colonisation et de jeunes devins s’opposent aux anciens et inventent un langage de contestation du fihavanana à travers des rituels d’inversion. Selon l’interprétation de l’auteure - de retour sur son terrain cinquante ans après une première mission - les symboliques cérémonielles, simultanément conservatrices du modèle des rapports institués entre royauté et autochtonie, reposent sur la négation de l’origine extérieure du pouvoir (les marchés) et intérieure (locaux ou nationaux) dans le contexte actuel de globalisation des normes.
