La sirena negra, obra de la gallega Emilia Pardo Bazán, cuenta la historia de Gaspar de Montenegro, un frívolo y egocéntrico “señorito” de Madrid que deambula sin rumbo y sin espíritu, permanentemente atormentado por la muerte (la “sirena negra”), y que conoce a una madre soltera muy enferma y a su pequeño hijo, al que finalmente decide adoptar. Esta nueva presencia en su hogar parece devolverle una felicidad que nunca había conocido, pero el destino se cruza irremediablemente en su camino y cambia repentinamente el curso normal de las cosas. La novela forma parte de la etapa más tardía y quizá menos conocida de Emilia Pardo Bazán y se adentra en el psicoanálisis, la conciencia y la introspección del ser humano. Además, presenta un personaje novedoso en la literatura española: el del dandi aristocrático, cínico y amoral, muy común en novelas francesas o inglesas, pero no tanto en la narrativa de nuestro país.
