D’une manière générale, la RFID englobe tout un éventail de dispositifs sans fil dont les capacités, la puissance et la sophistication varient, notamment les SpeedPass ExxonMobil, les dispositifs d’immobilisation des véhicules, les étiquettes EPC (Electronic Product Code), et bien d’autres encore. Les étiquettes RFID sont de petits dispositifs sans fil qui émettent des identifiants uniques lorsqu’ils sont interrogés par des lecteurs RFID, qui émettent de puissants champs électromagnétiques et lisent les informations de l’étiquette.
