Le processus de colonisation des terres brésiliennes par la Couronne portugaise, tout en peuplant d’autres espaces, a fait émerger de nouveaux modes de vie sociale. Fruits du métissage ethnique, ces groupes marginalisés s’établissent et créent leurs propres formes de culture et de subsistance (Candido, 2003). Dans le nord-est du Brésil, le matuto est le reflet de cette expansion capitaliste. Ainsi, cette recherche explore les œuvres poétiques de Jessier Quirino, originaire de Paraíba, en analysant les poèmes dans lesquels l’auteur utilise le terme matuto pour désigner le personnage de ses poèmes.
