La invención de la fotografía hacia 1839 significó un impacto profundo en las mentalidades de la sociedad decimonónica respecto a la reproducción y representación de las imágenes visuales. Simultáneamente, la estereoscopía añadió su propio noema de presencialidad y artificio de tangibilidad, impactando los procesos educativos, el fenómeno experiencial de los 'viajeros de butaca' y creando la primera industria fotográfica global. Todo ello sentó las bases para el desarrollo de la primera sociedad mediática.
