Il ruolo degli Stati Uniti nel sistema internazionale ha dominato la letteratura degli ultimi decenni, nel tentativo di comprendere l’impatto della politica estera statunitense sull’ordine politico internazionale. L’analisi più dominante del ruolo degli Stati Uniti è stata probabilmente fornita dalla prospettiva realista, in particolare dal suo ramo della teoria della stabilità egemonica (HST). Secondo questo approccio, l’egemone è percepito come benigno in quanto fornisce la stabilità e la sicurezza affinché gli altri possano beneficiare e prosperare sotto la sua guida, sacrificando al contempo i propri interessi a breve termine per il bene della stabilità del sistema. In questo libro, l’autore mette in discussione questa teoria utilizzando la teoria neo-gramsciana, introdotta negli anni Settanta da Robert Cox sulla base degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci relativi al concetto di egemonia e ideologia. Il libro si concentra sulla politica estera statunitense in Medio Oriente, data l’importanza di questa regione per gli interessi materiali degli Stati Uniti e della classe egemonica dominante. Il caso del Medio Oriente può quindi essere ideale per capire come l’ideologia egemonica delle élite sia stata applicata, e lo sia tuttora, per salvaguardare tali interessi.
