Este libro se propone un estudio de algunas novelas sentimentales uruguayas publicadas en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y su relación con la conformación de un imaginario nacional. Aunque las novelas son tratadas como romances nacionales, éstas difieren de muchos otros ejemplos latinoamericanos por el hecho de problematizar la finalidad pedagógica inmanente en este tipo de textualidades. Buena parte de estas divergencias pueden observarse en la representación corporal de los personajes femeninos en novelas que fueron publicadas durante la primera etapa de la modernización en dicho país. De acuerdo a estas formulaciones, surgen las siguientes preguntas: ¿cuál es el cuerpo de la nación que estas novelas proponen? ¿Las novelas estudiadas pueden ser consideradas romances nacionales?, ¿En qué medida estas novelas sentimentales mantienen una relación conflictiva con el proceso de modernización? ¿Por qué estas novelas fueron prácticamente olvidadas por el canon literario?
