La guerra de los mundos, publicada en 1898, es la primera novela que describe una invasión alienígena de la Tierra, un tema recurrente desde entonces en el que posteriormente se han basado numerosos libros y películas. En ella, H. G. Wells describe cómo la llegada de habitantes de Marte pone a prueba a una humanidad ingenua que tendrá que organizarse para evitar la destrucción del planeta. El autor recurre a gran cantidad de descripciones científicas, premoniciones sobre el futuro de la tecnología y entresijos políticos para hablarnos de la vanidad y la falsa seguridad de una humanidad autosatifecha a la que acechan incontables peligros.
