Esta obra tiene como propósito presentar los resultados de investigaciones en torno a la Primera Guerra Mundial, conflicto que transcurrió hace más de 100 años y que no solo marcó el final de una época, sino que también trazó los lineamientos para una serie de hechos que tuvieron lugar a lo largo del siglo XX. Además de presentar una reflexión en torno a la guerra en sus características y proyecciones generales, este trabajo hace énfasis en la manera como la Gran Guerra se manifestó en América Latina. Aunque el continente no presenció batallas con tanques o submarinos, enfrentamientos aéreos, ataques a bayoneta calada y demás situaciones que se dieron en Europa, sí vio cómo en algunos ámbitos de su cotidianidad se manifestaron los ecos de una crisis que parecía lejana; uno de ellos fue en la prensa y medios de comunicación pública, aspecto que recibe especial atención en este libro y que demuestra que el mundo, a partir de entonces, comenzaba a hacerse mucho más pequeño gracias la circulación de información a escala global. 10
