'L’amore dell’uomo è una cosa a parte della vita dell’uomo, è l’intera esistenza della donna'. Byron Sì, l’amore è l’intera esistenza di una donna. Alcune donne moderne potrebbero obiettare a questo. Potrebbero dire che questo era vero per la donna del passato, che era esclusa da tutte le altre vie dell’attività umana. La donna di oggi ha altri interessi oltre a quelli dell’amore. Ma io sostengo che questo è vero solo per una piccola percentuale di donne; e anche in questa piccola minoranza di donne, le attività sociali, scientifiche e artistiche non possono prendere il posto dell’amore; per quanto queste donne possano essere impegnate e di successo, vi diranno, se godete della loro fiducia, che sono infelici, se la loro vita sentimentale è insoddisfacente. Niente, niente può riempire il vuoto creato dalla mancanza d’amore. Le varie attività possono aiutare a coprire il vuoto, a proteggerlo da occhi estranei, ma non possono riempirlo. Perché essenzialmente la donna è fatta per l’amore. Non esclusivamente, ma essenzialmente, e una donna che non ha avuto amore nella sua vita è stata un fallimento. Le poche eccezioni che si possono citare non fanno che sottolineare la regola.
