La désertification est un problème mondial qui a des répercussions sociales, environnementales et économiques importantes, et qui provoque le déplacement de milliers de personnes à la recherche de terres et de nourriture. Au Brésil, ce problème touche 11 États et environ un quart des municipalités brésiliennes se trouvent dans des zones susceptibles à la désertification, la plupart dans le semi-aride du nord-est. Outre la vulnérabilité causée par l’irrégularité de la saison des pluies dans le semi-aride nord-est, les municipalités du Ceará présentent une partie considérable de leur sol en état de dégradation progressive. Face à la pénurie de ressources hydriques et économiques, les habitants du sertão sont contraints de tirer leur subsistance de la faune et de la flore locales. Les changements climatiques et le forçage anthropique constituent ensemble le binôme climat-homme, qui accélère les processus de dégradation et intensifie les niveaux de pauvreté, aboutissant à un cercle vicieux.
