Les modèles animaux constituent des outils indispensables dans la recherche visant à identifier de nouveaux antidépresseurs et à mieux comprendre la neuropathologie qui sous-tend l’état pathologique idiopathique de la dépression. Divers paradigmes ont été développés et jouent un rôle déterminant dans la détection du potentiel antidépresseur de nouveaux composés en phase préclinique. Les modèles couramment utilisés sont variés et ont été initialement développés en fonction des conséquences comportementales du stress, de l’administration de médicaments, de lésions ou de manipulations génétiques. À mesure que de nouvelles cibles sont identifiées, tant par des découvertes fortuites que par des recherches fondées sur des hypothèses, les paradigmes animaux existants sont modifiés et de nouveaux tests sont mis au point pour détecter les actions antidépressives de composés agissant sur un large éventail de cibles neuronales et génétiques. Cet ouvrage vise à faire le lien entre les modèles animaux existants et les traitements disponibles à ce jour dans la prise en charge de la dépression.
