Il libro è diviso in due parti.Il debito estero ha un effetto negativo sul tasso di cambio reale nel breve e nel lungo periodo quando si utilizza la tecnica PMG. Tuttavia, il modello dell’effetto soglia di Hansen (1999) mostra che l’indebitamento esterno ha un effetto negativo sul tasso di cambio reale inizialmente e questo effetto negativo si inverte quando l’indebitamento raggiunge una soglia del 41,8735%.
