Publicada primero por partes a lo largo de casi un año en un periódico antiesclavista, The New Era, la novela sacudió la sensibilidad de los lectores por cuestionar, desde una postura moral plagada de comentarios cristianos y citas bíblicas, la legitimidad de la esclavitud, además de denunciar a sus promotores, varios de ellos renombrados ministros de culto. El impacto fue tal que solo la Biblia vendió más ejemplares que La cabaña del tío Tom, recién impresa, en 1852. En los Estados Unidos se vendieron 300.000 volúmenes, unos 200.000 en la Gran Bretaña, donde pronto el tiraje llegó a un millón de ejemplares. La autora logró conmover a la gente por esta historia llena de sentimentalismo, sus descripciones de la vida de los esclavos negros en las colonias del sur y las tragedias por las separaciones de las familias.Beecher Stowe no había viajado en su vida a las plantaciones del sur, pero se nutrió de muchas historias escuchadas en boca de antiguos esclavos, pues fue parte del Ferrocarril Subterráneo, una organización clandestina que ayudaba a escapar esclavos del sur hacia los territorios libres del norte. Su esposo, pastor protestante igual que el padre de la escritora, era también un abolicionista militante.Cuando Stowe se encontró con Abraham Lincoln en 1862, durante la Guerra Civil, el saludo del entonces presidente de los Estados Unidos fue: “¡Así que usted es la pequeña mujer que escribió el libro que inició esta gran guerra!”
