La Araucana es un gran poema épico sobre la conquista de Arauco, entendida ésta como parte de la universal empresa imperial española. Ella canta no solo las heroicas hazañas de los indígenas sino que también la de sus conquistadores, pues uno de los objetivos del poema es sacar a luz la gesta de los españoles, y evitar así “el agravio que algunos españoles recibirían si quedaran sus hazañas en perpetuo silencio”. 10
