Il presente volume esamina la storia operativa della 29ª Unterseebootsflottille, lunità della Kriegsmarine tedesca incaricata di condurre la guerra sottomarina nel bacino del Mediterraneo tra il dicembre 1941 e il settembre 1944, e in parte anche la storia della La 23ª Flottiglia U-Boot (23. Unterseebootsflottille) pure operativa nel Mediterraneo (1941-1942) con base operativa a Salamina, in Grecia, sotto il comando del Kapitänleutnant Fritz Frauenheim. Attraverso l’analisi delle fasi costitutive, delle strutture di comando, delle principali operazioni belliche e del progressivo declino di fronte alla supremazia aeronavale alleata, il saggio ricostruisce il contributo - e i limiti strategici - di questa formazione in uno dei teatri secondari della Seconda guerra mondiale, dimostrando come il Mediterraneo rappresentasse per gli Mediterraneo rappresentasse per gli U-Boot un ambiente operativo radicalmente diverso dall’Atlantico, e alla fine insuperabilmente ostile.
