Antonio Callado miałby dziś 100 lat, gdyby żył. Był walecznym dziennikarzem, poświęcił się pisaniu sztuk teatralnych, opowiadań i powieści. W latach 1941-1947 mieszkał w Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie, jak twierdził, odkrył Brazylię ukrytą za Brazylią, przerażająco brutalną wobec własnego narodu. W książce „Kryzys utopii: lewica w powieściach Antonio Callado' można znaleźć ramę dla czterech powieści intelektualisty, powstałych w czasach brazylijskiej dyktatury wojskowej (1964-1985): Quarup, Bar Don Juan, Reflexos do Baile i Sempreviva. Tworząc różne postacie, które żyją w różnych czasach i miejscach, Callado komponuje fabułę jednej wielkiej powieści, która przechodzi od utopii do melancholii, od romansu nauki do romansu rozczarowania.
