This volume brings together two significant Elizabethan pamphlets that offer a vivid glimpse into the literary and social landscape of late sixteenth-century England. 'Kind-Hartes Dreame', written by Henry Chettle in 1592, is a satirical work presented as a series of papers delivered to the author by several ghosts. Through these spectral voices-including those of the famous entertainer Richard Tarlton and the writer Robert Greene-Chettle addresses contemporary social issues, from the abuses of ballad-mongers to the practices of dishonest tradesmen. The work serves as an important early example of the Elizabethan prose pamphlet, blending social commentary with literary parody.Accompanying Chettle’s work is 'Nine Daies Wonder' (1600) by William Kemp, the celebrated comic actor of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. In this energetic narrative, Kemp recounts his famous morris dance from London to Norwich. Beyond a simple travelogue, it captures the public’s fascination with Kemp’s feat and provides valuable insights into the performative culture of the era. Together, these works illustrate the vibrant, often contentious world of the Elizabethan press and the intersecting lives of poets, actors, and the public during the height of the English Renaissance. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
