Der Band beschreibt eine Methode zur quantitativen, multidimensionalen Erfassung chronischer Schmerzen bei Karzinompatienten im Endstadium der Krankheit. Beim Versagen aller üblichen Schmerztherapien wurde bei diesen Patienten eine kontinuierliche peridurale Opiatanalgesie durchgeführt, wodurch eine Reduzierung der Schmerzen um durchschnittlich 70% erreicht werden konnte. Der therapeutische Effekt wird bezüglich anamnestischer Daten, Schmerzcharakteristika und Begleitmedikation ausführlich analysiert. Aufgrund dieser Ergebnisse werden Vorschläge für die Behandlung schwerster Schmerzzustände gemacht, die für schmerztherapeutisch tätige Ärzte interessant und hilfreich sind. In einem speziellen Kapitel werden die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der periduralen Opiatanalgesie zusammengefaßt.
