Ausführlich werden die Entstehung, die Ausgestaltung und die Wechselwirkungen von drei kantonalen Institutionen, nämlich der Regierungen, der Parteien- und Parlamentssysteme und der direkten Demokratie in den 26 Kantonen beschrieben und analysiert. Abschließend untersucht der Autor die Wirkungen politisch-institutioneller Arrangements auf die kantonalen Politikergebnisse und entwickelt eine Kantonstypologie.
