Im Mittelpunkt steht die Zusammenführung und Verknüpfung der schweizerischen Innenpolitikforschung mit neuen Forschungsfragen der vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft im Zuge der Wiederentdeckung politischer Institutionen. Ausführlich werden die Entstehung, die Ausgestaltung und die Wechselwirkungen von drei kantonalen Institutionen, nämlich der Regierungen, der Parteien- und Parlamentssysteme und der direkten Demokratie in den 26 Kantonen beschrieben und analysiert. Abschließend untersucht der Autor die Wirkungen politisch-institutioneller Arrangements auf die kantonalen Politikergebnisse und entwickelt eine Kantonstypologie.
