Muitas vezes, entramos na filosofia por caminhos tortuosos, por circunstâncias por vezes fortuitas que suscitam um questionamento. Assim, o filósofo Platão teria seguido os passos de Sócrates para resolver a arbitrariedade que tirou a vida a um mestre tão grande. O nosso interesse por Kant, é preciso admitir desde o início, tem origem na vontade de saber o que podemos conhecer juntos, para além das nossas experiências particulares e, por vezes, determinantes, de raça, cultura, religião e sexo. Para compreender e resolver os problemas gerados pela pluralidade das diferenças ditas legítimas, escolhemos deliberadamente a problemática dos limites do conhecimento em Kant, a partir de um problema muito específico: o problema da coisa em si. As razões para tal escolha são de duas ordens: em primeiro lugar, com a coisa em si, somos confrontados com o conceito sem o qual é impossível entrar no sistema de Kant, mas com o qual é impossível permanecer nele, segundo Jacobi; em segundo lugar, de uma forma singular, o problema da coisa em si coloca radicalmente o desafio da Crítica, ou seja, o poder da razão em geral em relação a todos os conhecimentos.
