This is Volume 53 of the 'Journal Of The ... National Encampment Of The Grand Army Of The Republic.' The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. Founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and dissolved in 1956 when its last member died, it was among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, promoting patriotism and civic virtue, lobbying for aid to veterans, and sponsoring memorial days and monuments. This volume offers insights into the GAR’s activities, discussions, and resolutions during its national encampment, providing a valuable primary source for understanding the post-Civil War experiences of Union veterans and the organization’s role in shaping American society and memory. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
