O tema principal da obra do crítico de arte inglês John Ruskin foi uma teoria da percepção, cujo objetivo era o ensino do desenho considerado como parte da política industrial lon­drina do século XIX. No Brasil, podemos encontrar a influência do trabalho de Ruskin no Liceu de Artes e Ofícios do Rio de Janeiro (fundado em 1886 pelo arquiteto Joaquim Béthencourt da Silva), que tinha como sócio honorário o escritor Rui Barbosa, leitor de Ruskin. Muitas das ideias ruskinianas influenciaram o método de ensino do desenho no Liceu, que pretendia transformar a cidade do Rio de Janeiro em uma obra de arte. Neste livro, Claudio Silveira do Amaral abre a possibilidade para a revisão das experiências arquitetônicas brasileiras baseadas na concepção da estética ruskiniana, procurando problematizar e rediscutir os alicerces teóricos de nossa sociedade industrial.
